Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks for Image-to-Image Translation: pix2pix Tutorial

In this tutorial, we will explore the concept of Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs), specifically the pix2pix model, which can be used to perform image-to-image translation tasks. The pix2pix cGAN is a type of deep learning model that uses a combination of generators and discriminators to translate input images into corresponding output images.

The architecture of the pix2pix cGAN consists of two primary components: a discriminator represented by a convolutional PatchGAN classifier, and a generator with a U-Net-based architecture. In this tutorial, we will use a preprocessed copy of the CMP Facade Database provided by the Center for Machine Perception at the Czech Technical University in Prague. This dataset contains building facade images, which we will use as input and output examples for our cGAN model. The pix2pix cGAN is not limited to this specific application; it can be applied to a wide range of tasks, including synthesizing photos from label maps, generating colorized photos from black and white images, turning Google Maps photos into aerial images, and even transforming sketches into photos.

The concept of cGANs was first proposed in the paper 'Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets' by Mirza and Osindero in 2014. Since then, cGANs have been widely used for image-to-image translation tasks due to their ability to learn complex mappings between input and output images.

To train our pix2pix cGAN model, we will use a dataset of around 80k steps, with each epoch taking approximately 15 seconds on a single V100 GPU. The generated output images demonstrate the effectiveness of the pix2pix cGAN in translating building facade images from one style to another.
